Introduction

Welcome to our challenge diary. We have tried to be as honest as possible in our account, to reflect the true "flavour" of our challenge attempt (mostly it tasted of rain!!!).

The challenge team consisted of Andy Baulch, Richard Fryer, Tom Fryer, Martin Gibson (Me), Marcus Ottaviani, Jeremy Smith, David Throssell and our support driver, David Gilhooly.

The Team. From left: Martin, David T, Andy, David G. (in the car), Marcus, Richard and at the back Tom (left) and Jeremy.

We had been loaned a two day old (8 miles on the clock) Ford Galaxy MPV by the lovely people of Alperton Ford for the duration of the challenge, in which we set off for Fort William on Sunday 21st June 1998 (Marcus' 16th birthday). We reached Fort William in record time (the Galaxy drives itself, and doesn't like to go slowly - honest!) and arrived at our accomodation, Glendevin, a B&B just South of Fort William. We highly recommend Glendevin to any three peakers or visitors to the Highlands. With time to kill before dinner we set off to see the sights of Fort William (errrrr.....) leaving Marcus glued to the world cup. Following a loverleey dinner, we got down to some serious preparation.....

The team prepare by dilligently..errr...watching the World Cup

On Monday, we had to sit around Fort William all day, which was actually not quite as boring as we expected. The Safeway car park is really quite fascinating.... By about 3pm Jeremy was desperate to start (we think he wanted to be down in time for dinner), but we held him off until 5pm, when we headed for the youth hostel at Glen Nevis, where David takes over the story.
